Personal Narative Essay
My friend and his girl had just received the Wonderous Blessing of a
Baby Girl. Also they were the proud recipients of a gift for said blessing, a Doberman Puppy - Josie. They were both very happy with this yet, when the puppy started to grow she would lick the baby's fingers, this was not to the mothers liking, because of her thoughts of a Doberman devowering her child. She had many an unpleasent thought.
They all came by my house one Saturday morning - my house was on the Lake in New Hampshire. At the time I was about 18 and I had two kids - Ricky, Tina, and
" My Old Lady ". Thier request was that I would watch the puppy for a given time. As it turned out we had become the new owners of the puppy. She was quite a handful, the hardest part was to teach the children not to feed or water the puppy, as I would be the only contact that she could have. I had set a very rigid and strick regimen for said puppy.
When she came of age to get her shots we walked into town to the Vet. , She was
a very well mannered puppy, she could be left and would not move until the command was given, she could sit , stand , lay down, stay , heal , retreive , and swim. She was not allowed food unless it was I that fed her. Coming of age she got loose one day and was gone for almost a week. Upon return she was dirty and sore. A few weeks later we found out she was to become a " Mommy ". All the care she was to be given came from my girl and the kids as her regimen had been given some slack. Still the " Mailman " would only deliver the mail on Saturday mornings when I was home.
Josie became the very " Loud and Proud Bitch " of twelve mixed bred, Doberman and German Shepherd pups. She would diligently care for her litter and was very protective of them. My girl was not to happy when the pups started taking over the house, she would constantly plead with me to find homes for them. My search for good homes was not very difficult as at the time I had a very large brotherhood. We would help each other with whatever had to be done, downing trees, chopping wood for the winter, painting, roofing, the maintenance of the motocycles and cars/trucks, there was not a project we could not handle. All work was done at no charge, theese projects were all done on weekends as everyone had full-time jobs a house and family. You could say life was ideal, it was still a small town and eveybody knew each other.
As the story goes, all is not well that does not end well. When " Josie " surrendered her last offspring she was not long for this " Great Earth ", She passed in the night and we layed her to rest in " The Garden by The Lake ".
Lookimg back when I received Josie, my girl was upset that I payed way to much attention to the dog, I tried to explain that in order for her to become the best she could, she had to have but one authority that being I . There is no substitution for a strick regimen. They must learn properly, although it sounds cruel in the end, nothing else matters but the authority and relationship between the two. We would argue over stupid things, like time spent working to make money to get the things she wanted. After one of our more explosive arguements, I had taken Josie with me to the great " City of New York " so as my girl could have some time to collect her thoughts on our relationship, she had wanted her Dad to move in with us as he was retiring, and was on a fixed income, I mostly agreed, yet there were some ground rules, He was not allowed to touch the children as that was to be thier mothers and mine to decide the degree of said acts.
When we arrived in the city it was late at night. We tried to get on the subway but the man there said they would not allow the dog without a leash, I tried to explain that she was a good dog and quite friendly - She was red and black with a short tail and long ears. Her size was large and people miss took her as being aggressive.
As we walked the entire length of Manhattan, we met several people most were friendly, some were not. One girl in Spanish Harlem yelled across the street, " Hey ! ! ! why don't you feed that dog ? My reply was " Come across the street and feed her yourself " She just laughed and we went on our way down the road.
We finallt get to my younger brothers apartment in the early A.M. The apartment had double doors so we had to wait for his return. I sat up on the floor with Josie by my side, I drifted off to sleep and when I awoke Josie was in attack mode, being very ferocious and as protective as she had ever been, at my command she sat - yet she remained at full alert. The person at the door was my brothers room-mate. It was quite a first impression. We did not stay long, just a couple of days, then we hit the road Hitch-Hiking back to New Hampshire and
" The Family "
In conclusion, I would definitely say :
" Josie was one of the most precious gifts ever given to this world ".
She was at all times tremendously protective of The Children , My Girl ,
and most assuredly " One's Master ".

Class Assignment
Many of you have probably heard the rule "Don't just show, tell, too!" Telling refers to summarizing. Showing refers to giving the reader concrete details that make the story come alive for her. Showing can be a very challenging part of retelling a personal experience.
Working with a partner, flip through Ch. 7 & 8 of The Help and look for sensory details. These are almost always an example of showing. Copy and paste this chart to one of your blogs and fill it in with examples.
When you are finished, copy and paste the chart into a new blog entry and begin to fill in some of the sensory details that are part of the experience you're retelling in your own essay.

Outline for My Story - " The Job "
" The Job "
I had just moved down from, New Hampshire. At the time I was unemployed and needed to find a Job. I was staying with friends and the prospects of employment were not very favorable. My excursions took me to many an interview. Still it was not until I had hiked to the other side of the creek did I find " The Job ".
At my interview the foreman asked several questions - All were answered with a possitive response, and I was employed. The quarter-mile warehouse was Guarded and you needed a company photo I. D. to pass through security. The company dealt mostly with " Gold and Silver " they also had "Lead Crystal " glasses and vases. The layout of the place was
" The Warehouse " with " Shipping and Receiving " on the first floor and " Corperate Offices", " The Repair Shop ", and " The Cafeteria " all on the second floor. " The Company " was a one of the largest in the area, well established and with very close ties with " The Neighborhood " as
" The Owners " were " Local Boy's ". Almost all of thier employees lived in the immediate area, they were friendly, talkative and always most helpful.
From day one my job could not have been so well suited. The warehouse was vast yet very well layed - out. I was quite young and single. This lead to many a " Lost Weekend ".
My foreman Bill would try to trick me with special orders - for some of the crystal sets had interchangable parts, also his girl was one of the top repair workers the company had. She knew everything about interchangable parts, we would play a numbers game with the products that could mix and/or match, We also hung out on the weekends. After about 90 days I received a promotion and raise, I was now a forklift driver and my job became more involved with greater quantities of product to be handled and shipped. I was very thorough with my work and enjoyed working. The job was physical but I was in my youth.
Around this time I moved into my own place and my exstensive use of distilled spirits would cause me to use excessive late days - This would lead to the first of three times I was to be fired from " The Job ". I was called in for a meeting with my foreman and the heads of
shippng and receiving to discuss my situation. I was reinstated / with a raise. They could not figure out how I was able to produce almost a week of work in two days. Later I was to have a conference with all the heads of all the departments and the two owners of the company in the " Board Room ". Me a non - educated ( I did not get a G.E.D. until I was 35 ) forklift driving,
warehouse worker was to " Teach " theese most learned computer educated persons the fine art of Warehousing " 1 0 1 ". The first thing I mentioned was the fact that they handled the product way too much - that brought about the need for " The Repair Department ". When I set up my work I would gather all the records of inventory - product on hand and also product to be received, I would match theese with the dates needed as to when the product was to be shipped.
The day the product was received I would transfer said product directly to shipping thus the middle man was omitted. My orders grew so large all the salespersonel wanted to deal with me directly, I could find any product mix / match any set and also have the fastest turn - around time that the entire company ever saw. Still the powers that be - that omnipotent light never shown, for being uneducated would lead me to surrender the most joyous of jobs with some of the closest companions. It was my third time being fired and again another " Sit Down ", rehired with yet another raise. The last straw was when they hired a college graduate to be my boss. I was in line for the warehouse foreman position but was passed over. In hindsight I can not presume to know all - being constatly late no shows getting fired " T H R E E " times does not look good on ones resume, yet the comradery and friendships were of the greatest of losses. People always say they will stay in touch yet lives change - work , family , friends , residencies , all constant reminders that this orbital mass is eternaly in motion.
I would like to end this factual tale with : To note, from my last day of employment up until the time I was able to sucessfully complete my G. E. D. on all applications I would " L I E " as I was well read and either " Baffle them with Bull or Dazzle them with Brilliance ".
They say " For in reality we own nothing , It is all but a Loan ,
This life is but a " Primary Preparatory of the Life to Come ".
As Always in Friendship , Mr. B. A. Mazurowski " Peace "
Think into the future about Mae Mobley. What do you think she will have to say about her childhood?
In the future Mae Mobley will most probably resent her mother and yet she will most surely cherish all the time and care Aibileen bestowed upon her on a daily basis. The rejection of her mother and the way she would wait for Aibileen to arrive to get the attention her paternal mother could not find a way to show the affection that every child deserves.

Expectations of Women - Now and Then
Today women are more liberated and do not have the same rigid expetations as in the past.
They are no longer treated as just a wife, it is more of an equal partnership.
As in the past they were expected to just keep the house, raise children and support the husband.
